CD sleeve and accompanying webpage. the thing on the frontcover consists of two screenshots of a mac implementation of john conway’s “game of life”; [r-pentomino, generation 0+1].

the musician, frans de waard, explicitly points out that “this [CD] is a work of borrowed ideas, borrowed titles and borrowed equipment”, so I wanted the design to be “borrowed” as well.

Also, the notion of “automatic” in its earliest sense seemed to fit with the music and the title: “… the Motions of Automata, or Machines, whose Principle of Motion is within themselves.” [unknown author, 1748]
